What is a red dot sight?

A red dot sight is a type of aiming device on a pistol or rifle. Other types of aiming devices are Scopes, Lasers, and Iron (or Fixed) sights. A red dot sight gives the shooter a small window through which they look down range at a target. Most Red Dot Sights do not offer a magnification (Although some do) of the shooter’s view like most scopes do. The cool thing about a red dot sight is that the red dot is not always in the center of the window, like a scope’s reticle which is always in the center of the shooter’s view. Therefore, the shooter does not need to have the sights, barrel and eyes in a perfect line. Depending on the alignment and position of the weapon, the red dot moves around in the window and is always (theoretically) showing where the shot is going to impact. The Red Dot sight does allow for fast target acquisition, but it does tend to get in the way of traditional aiming technique teachings.

Red dot sights are very popular, and many are available with green dots, or both red and green colors, depending on the shooter’s preference.

As mentioned above most Red Dot sights are 1x power, meaning looking through them has no magnification. Some do offer magnification of 2x, 3x, and I have tried some that are even 5x. Compare that to a scope that offers from 1x to 60x magnification. There are applications where every type of sight excels.

What are red dot sights good for?

There are two advantages.

First there is only one sighting plane, as opposed to two on conventional “iron sights”. As such, you do not have to be perfectly aligned.

Secondly, you do not have to focus on the front sight. Your focus can be on the target (which is natural). This is particularly advantageous for older shooters, who may have a hard time focusing on something close.

How far is a red dot sight accurate?

As far as you can see, your target.

If you are using a quality red dot and it is sighted in. It should be as accurate as a magnified optic. However, you may have a hard-hitting target that you can barely see. With my eyes, I can set up a target at 100 yards with a red dot. The dot covers up the center, so I am centering the center of the red dot on the center of what I perceive as the target's center, which is hard to do. I can get a group pretty close to the center, but my group is not as tight as it is with magnified scope, but that is not because the dot is less accurate. It is because I am less accurate with a red dot due to my ability to see the center of the target behind my red dot.

However, at 50 yards, I can put the dot right in the center of the target, so my group is as tight as it is with a Magnified optic. That will tell you that a red dot sight is as accurate as a magnified optic as far as its ability.

Take that same target and put it out to 200. Your dot will cover more than the whole target, making it almost impossible to hit the center of the mark because it is now covering the entire target and part of the landscape area around it. So, it's not that a red dot is less accurate, but a shooter is less accurate due to not being able to center a target that is hidden behind the dot. It depends on the size of your target, how far it is, and your ability to see it.

Hitting larger targets, for example, a steel target, where your goal is not precision and tight groups, as long as you can see and center your dot on your target and compensate for droppage depending on what range you are zeroed at, you should be able to hit it as consecutively as you would with a magnified optic.

Dot size will also be a factor in how accurate you are. With a red dot, a bigger dot will cover more of the target.
